Trenitalia vs Italo: which train to book

Italy has two high-speed train companies. On the main routes both are fast, comfortable and similar in price — the details that matter are stations, times and where you are going next.

The short answer

Between the big cities — Milan, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples — compare both and book the one with the best time and price. Comfort and speed are very similar. For smaller towns, the coast and the lakes you will need Trenitalia’s regional trains (or regional operators such as Trenord in Lombardy), because Italo runs only high-speed services.

Watch the station

Most trains use the main central stations — Roma Termini, Milano Centrale, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Venezia Santa Lucia, Napoli Centrale. But some services stop only at secondary stations, such as Roma Tiburtina, Milano Rogoredo or Milano Porta Garibaldi, or Venezia Mestre on the mainland.

Always check the exact station name on your ticket, especially in Rome, Milan and Venice. Venezia Mestre is on the mainland; Venezia Santa Lucia is the station in the historic city.

When only a regional train works

Many favorite places are reached by regional trains, not high-speed ones — for example the Cinque Terre, Lake Como villages, Pompeii and many towns in Tuscany and Umbria.

  • Regional tickets usually have a fixed price and no seat reservation.
  • Paper regional tickets must be validated in the machines on the platform before you board. For digital tickets, follow the instructions on the ticket.
  • Buy them at station machines, ticket offices or in the operator’s app.

Booking tips

  • Book high-speed trains early. Prices change with demand; the cheapest fares sell out first.
  • Compare both companies for the same route and time — one is often cheaper on a given day.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early. The platform (binario) often appears on the board only shortly before departure.
  • Keep big luggage manageable: there are racks at the ends of the cars and above the seats.
  • Check for strikes before every train day — see our train strike guide.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Is Italo or Trenitalia better?

On the main high-speed routes they are very similar in speed and comfort. Compare times and prices for your date. For regional destinations only Trenitalia (or regional operators) can take you there.

Can I use a Trenitalia ticket on an Italo train?

No. The two companies sell separate tickets. A Trenitalia ticket is valid only on Trenitalia trains, and an Italo ticket only on Italo trains.

Do I need to validate my train ticket in Italy?

Paper regional tickets must be validated in the platform machines before boarding. High-speed tickets with a seat for a specific train do not need validation.

How long is the train from Rome to Florence?

About 1 hour 35 minutes on the fastest Frecciarossa and Italo trains.

Which Rome station do high-speed trains use?

Most use Roma Termini, but some stop only at Roma Tiburtina. Always check the station name on your ticket.
